Governor Martin

Cornelius Harnett played a leading role in causing royal governor Josiah Martin to flee from Fort Johnston to the HMS Cruizer prior to July 18, 1775 when then Colonel Robert Howe and 500 men who had gathered at Bruswick marched on Fort Johnston and set it afire.  For details see article posted in this Web site entitled “Harnett Helps Disgrace Governor Martin” under the menu item “Historically Important Events”
