Cornelius Harnett – Leader for Independence

The scene shown above represents an event in which Cornelius Harnett read the Declaration of Independence at Halifax, following its adoption by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.  Cornelius Harnett was President of the Council of Safety at the time, the highest office established by the Provincial Congress.  The enhanced version of the above drawing has been used to illustrate the article “Harnett: Leader for Independence” that appears under the menu item “Historically Important Events.”
