Duncan, a Lillington lawyer, is married to the former Betsy Loytty of Corning, New York and they have three children, Will, Sarah and Maggie. Betsy, also a lawyer, is a hearing officer with the North Carolina Employment Security Commission. Lydia, a Customer Services Manager for Hurricane Aqua Sports in Warsaw, North Carolina, is married to Scott McGhee, an Arborist and Bladesmith. They reside in Bladen County, North Carolina.
After military service from 1954 to 1958, Ed returned to Chapel Hill and earned an AB in Economics (1961) and a Law Degree (LLB-1964) from the University of North Carolina. As a lawyer Ed was in private practice for 20 years in Lillington. One of his private clients was the County of Harnett for a period of 12 years. Thereafter he served as a district court judge for 20 years in the 11th Judicial District, a district which covered Harnett, Lee and Johnston Counties. Following his retirement in 2004 he has continued, as of 2012, to serve as an emergency district court judge.
Ed’s interest in promoting the memory of Cornelius Harnett was developed through Sam Hummel, a friend and fraternity brother from his college days at Chapel Hill. Through his contact with Sam, Ed obtained an illustration by Don Long (1986) of Cornelius Harnett reading the Declaration of Independence at Halifax for use by The Rotary Club of Lillington. This illustration appears in this Web site under “Image Gallery/Harnett Reading Declaration of Independence” and under “Historically Important Events/Harnett-Leader for Independence.” This particular illustration has been used often over the years in promoting publicity for the annual fund raising event, “The Cornelius Harnett Gala”.
Ed arranged for this Web site through Roaring Aardvark, a Web design firm in Lillington that is owned and operated by Karen Kratz, a member of the Rotary Club of Lillington along with sponsors Glenn Hood and Ed. With able advice and assistance from Karen, Ed serves as editor of this Web site. With input from his co-sponsors, he has entered the historical summaries and other information in this web site. He claims all errors that remain as his sole responsibility.
